The player's ship is equipped with a force shield that protects the player's ship for a few seconds after it is spawned and may be activated later on by a freely definable key (default is the space bar) until the limited amount of shield energy is exhausted. The remaining amount of shield energy is shown by a bar on the lower end of the screen that is initially little more than half full and may be refilled by a special kind of ACME supply canisters. Skills in maneuvring and with the activation of the shield is helpful to significantly save shield energy supplies by avoiding collisions and shorter, nicely timed activations of the shield. Destruction of the own ship in the grace time at the end of a stage gives a new ship with a fresh (half) supply of shield energy without counting as a loss of a life.
